In
anteprima internazionale nella galleria MC Magma sarà
proiettato, fino a sabato 29 giugno, l'ultimo video di Sabrina
Sabato, "Il Bacio". Realizzato quest'anno,
verrà proposto insieme ad una precedente produzione video,
"Il Baco".
Questa
proposta è la prima di un nuovo ciclo denominato Fasterproject.
Fasterproject presenta in anteprima gli ultimi progetti di
artisti italiani e non, programmati per future esposizioni
all'estero o esclusivamente pensati per Fasterproject.
L'artista
nata a Napoli nel 1968, vive e lavora a Milano.
Sabrina Sabato
è
stata selezionata per la rassegna video che si terrà presso
il Centro Pompidou a Parigi nell'auditorium della Sala 2,
in occasione del 40° Festival Internazionale di Polipoesia
e Arti Multimediali Polyophonix il 3, 4 e 5 ottobre 2002,
dalle 15 alle 18. Contemporaneamente, sempre a Parigi, lo
stesso video sarà proiettato nel Centro di Cultura Canadese,
per un'altra rassegna video, nella prima settimana d'ottobre
e per l'intera notte del 5 Ottobre: "Notte Bianca dell'Arte
a Parigi". In queste rassegne saranno presenti altri
artisti della galleria MC Magma, quali Pieter Schoolwerth,
Jemima & Dolly Brown, Brian Cyril Griffiths
e Gina Tornatore .
"Il Bacio" di Sabrina Sabato, come molti video contemporanei,
funziona come un sistema di scatole cinesi che contiene al
suo interno riferimenti ad altri generi e ad altri codici
visivi. Sia la struttura minimalista della narrazione che
l'ambientazione, sembrano rievocare il glamour scanzonato
del videoclip d'autore e l'atmosfera frivola e brillante degli
spot pubblicitari. La magia dell'evento e le sue aspettative
- due bocche si congiungono sul tetto di un edificio da cui
è visibile un paesaggio urbano - possono essere cancellate
e annullate in un instante! Un mondo d'incanto può divenire
un mondo d'orrore! Un gesto violento ma anche un bacio possono
lasciare tracce indelebili nel nostro immaginario, mutare
la nostra psiche così fragile, destabilizzare soprattutto
chi finge di essere duro e resistente come l'acciaio. La paura
è sempre stata generatrice di conflitti eccessivi e di inutili
protezionismi; paura di perdere un "briciolo" di
benessere e di regalarlo a colui che è più bisognoso di noi.
Le parole della canzone di Hans Albers (1891 - 1960) nel sonoro
del video, raccontano la storia di un marinaio che pur promettendo
mari e monti alla sua bella, è già pronto a tradire le promesse
fatte e mai mantenute. La passione e la forza del bacio lasciano
lo spettatore incredulo e bisogna tornare a guardarlo affinché
si possano cogliere appieno la passività con la quale la donna
subisce il suo sogno ingannato ed ora già infranto, trasformatosi
in una stupida ingenuità infantile. Nell'attuale confusione
dei ruoli i due sessi si uniformano, sino alla messa in crisi
del modello maschile e all'inevitabile irrigidimento del sesso
"gentile"; ma in fondo si tratta semplicemente di
evoluzione della specie, nulla di così preoccupante! Ciò che
resta dell'atto è una sbavatura rossa sulla guancia dell'artista
che ora guarda disincantata verso lo spettatore.

Maria
Rosa Sossai vive e lavora a Roma. Critica d'arte e curatrice,
si occupa in maniera specifica di video d'artista e nuove
tecnologie. Ha pubblicato il libro "Artevideo. Storie
e culture del video d'artista in Italia" con la casa
editrice Silvana Editoriale. Ha curato rassegne e mostre in
gallerie e istituzioni quali: "Sweetie identità femminile
nel video britannico" con Cristiana Perrella, British
School, Roma, catalogo Castelvecchi arte, nel 1999. "Videovibe
Arte musica e video in Gran Bretagna", British School,
Roma, catalogo Castelvecchi arte, e "In Video Veritas,
rassegna di video italiani", British School, Roma, nel
2000. Inoltre dal 2001-02 è curatrice per la Fondazione Adriano
Olivetti e per il Magazzino d'Arte Moderna a Roma, oltre che
l'Archivio Merano a Palermo. Collabora con la rivista Flash
Art.
Sabrina Sabato sarà
presente all'inaugurazione, mercoledì 26 giugno e su appuntamento
per incontri con la stampa.

The world première
screening of Sabrina Sabato's latest video "Il
Bacio" (The Kiss), will continue through to Saturday,
June 29, at the MC Magma gallery. Completed earlier
this year, the production will be presented together with
one of her previous videos, "Il Baco", (The
Worm), that has also never before been screened in public.
This project is one of the first of a new
cycle known as Fasterproject. Fasterproject presents
the latest unpublished works of Italian and foreign artists,
scheduled for projects at future shows overseas, or produced
specifically for Fasterproject.
Sabrina Sabato
born
in Naples in 1968, she lives and works in Milan.
The artist's latest work is also part of the
video collection to be presented in auditorium hall 2 of the
Georges Pompidou Centre in Paris, as part of the 40th International
Festival of Polypoetry and Multimedia Art, Polyophonix, open
to the public on October 3, 4, and 5, 2002, from 3.00 p.m.
to 6 p.m. The video will also be screened at Paris' Canadian
Cultural Centre, as part of another video collection presented
during the first week of October and throughout the night
of October 5, under the title of "White Nights of Art
in Paris". Both these collections will also feature other
MC Magma gallery artists, such as Pieter Schoolwerth,
Jemima & Dolly Brown, Brian Cyril Griffiths
and Gina Tornatore .
Like many contemporary video productions,
Sabrina Sabato's "Il Bacio" (The Kiss)
resembles a sort of Russian doll, each piece a reference to
other genres and visual codes. The minimalist structure of
both the narrative and the setting seem to re-evoke the easy-going
glamour of art video-clips and the frivolous, sparkling atmosphere
of television commercials. The magic of the event and its
expectations - two mouths locked in embrace on the roof of
a building overlooking an urban landscape - can be shattered
and ruined in an instant! An enchanted world could turn into
a hell of horrors! Quite like an act of violence, a kiss can
leave indelible traces on the mind, changing our fragile psyches
and destabilising especially those who pretend that their
steel-cast personalities are beyond emotion. Fear has always
led to excessive conflict and useless self-protection; it
is often fear of losing a "crumb" of our wellbeing
that leads us to become ungenerous towards those more in need.
The song by Hans Albers (1891 - 1960) that makes up the soundtrack
of the video, tells of a sailor who, even while promising
the earth and sky to his beloved, is already on the brink
of betraying her and breaking all his promises. The passion
and sheer force of the kiss leave the viewer incredulous and
one must go back to viewing it a few times before fully understanding
the passiveness with which the woman surveys the meagre remnants
of her shattered dreams and broken heart, that seem to be
reduced to stupid childish gullibility. While the current
upsetting of gender-based roles has led to a certain levelling
off between the sexes, with the male model in serious crisis
and the inevitable hardening of the "gentle" sex,
it is merely a part of the evolution of our species, and nothing
to be overly worried about! What remains at the end, is the
a red stain on the actress's cheek as she stares disenchanted
into the lens.

Maria Rosa Sossai lives and works in Rome.
An art critic and curator, she specialises in video art and
new technologies. Her book, "Artevideo. Storie e culture
del video d'artista in Italia" ("VideoArt: History
and Culture of Art Video in Italy") is published by Silvana
Editoriale. She has served as curator for collections and
exhibitions in galleries and institutions such as: "Sweetie
female identity in British video", with Cristiana Perrella,
British School, Rome, catalogue Castelvecchi arte, in 1999;
"Videovibe Art, music and video in Great Britain",
British School, Rome, catalogue Castelvecchi arte, and "In
Video Veritas, collection of Italian videos", British
School, Roma in 2000. Furthermore, in 2001-02, she was appointed
curator for the Adriano Olivetti Foundation, and the Magazzino
d'Arte Moderna, both in Rome, as well as the Merano Archive
in Palermo. She is a contributor to the magazine Flash Art
Sabrina Sabato will be at the show's opening Wednesday, June 26 will also be available
by appointment for press conferences.
